NCBA Hall of Fame Personal Biographies

Ramon N. Bell

Inducted February 21, 1998

The nominee joined Guilford Bowhunters and became a NCBA member in 1979. The following year he became an official NCBA Scorer. In 1982, then President Dennis Allman asked the nominee to assume the position of Records Chairman for the NCBA. The nominee was certified as a Pope and Young Scorer in 1986 and has maintained an active status with Pope and Young since that time. From 1992 to 1994, he served on the Pope and Young Records Committee. In March, 1993, he attended and served on Pope and Young's prestigious 18th Biennial Recording panel judging in Minneapolis, Minnesota, and again in the 25th Biennial Recording panel judging in Lancaster, Pennsylvania in 2007.

In 1990, the nominee commissioned the first ever NCBA art print by Nelson Horton of Apex, N.C., entitled "Morning Trail." The sale of art prints helped finance the purchase of a computer for records keeping and the publication of NCBA's "Bowhunting Records of North Carolina, First Edition." The first edition was compiled and edited by the nominee, Ramon N. Bell. A second edition was published in 2002.

The nominee compiles entries into the "All-Time Records Listings" as Records Chairman. During the past 15 years in this position (as of Jan.1998), he has spent numerous hours of volunteer time scoring trophies, fielding phone calls, and filing the appropriate paperwork for NCBA and Pope and Young Club alike. He has also coordinated and supervised the scoring of bowhunting entries at Wake County Wildlife Club's annual "Dixie Deer Classic" in Raleigh, N.C., which has recognized the efforts of the nominee and official scorers each year.

The nominee oversees the fabrication of plaques and has assembled them for the NCBA Annual Awards Contest from 1983 to 2003. In his duties as Records Chairman, he investigated incidents of false entries or attempted false entries into the Records System in order to maintain the integrity of the system.

The nominee coordinated vendor space for the convention of 1995 and solicited hunts, door prizes, and other items to be auctioned at the 1996, 1997 and 1998 banquets. He has been recognized at previous banquets as the recipient of the Presidential Award in 1983 and 1986; The "Life Member Service Award" in 1988 and "Service Award" in 1994.

The nominee helped schedule and organize a Pope and Young Measurer's seminar that was held at the Wake County Wildlife Club's clubhouse in July of 1999. The seminar was conducted by P&Y Executive Secretary, Glenn and Kevin Hisey. Twenty-one people were certified as P&Y measurers including eleven who are also NCBA official measurers. He has been an official P&Y measurer since March, 1986 and is a "Senior" Life P&Y member, Emeritus.

The nominee helped organize the "Carolina Hunter Showcase," a satellite show in conjunction with the "Dixie Deer Classic" in 1999 and 2000. He registered all the vendors for the "CHS" for these two years, which was held in the "Dorton Arena", adjacent to the "Jim Graham Building", where the "Dixie Deer Classic" was held. This show was a precursor for the expansion of the "Dixie Deer Classic" in 2001 and 2002. NCBA volunteers continued to operate the "Dixie Deer Classic Indoor 3-D Shoot" for the Wake County Wildlife Club at the show through 2013 when the WCWC chose to discontinue the shoot.

The nominee has served in a professional manner while also performing other demanding positions within his law enforcement career. After retiring from law enforcement in November 1997, he was recognized for his many years of work with youth (Scouting and Police Explorer Post #241) as well as his many contributions to law enforcement.

The nominee continued as NCBA's Records Chairman through 2003 when he turned it over to David Allen, then to Joey Thompson in 2005. His organization of bowhunting records has been shown to be beyond reproach. The "Bowhunting Records of North Carolina-2nd Edition" went to the press for publication in 2002. The "1st Edition" was published in 1992. Ramon compiled and edited both books.

In 1993, the nominee submitted the motion to the Executive Council to create the North Carolina Bowhunter's Hall of Fame, which now consists of *twenty-five (25) inductees. (*as of March 2013) He has given NCBA 34 years of dedicated service (as of March 2013), which totaled 22 years as Records Chairman and 7 years as President. Ramon had a severe stroke in January of 2012 and turned over the presidents position to Andy Smith in March of 2013. He continues to serve NCBA as Past President and strives to protect bowhunting in our state. His hard work and accomplishments are forever "etched" into the history of the NCBA. It is only befitting that the nominee now becomes the 6th person to be inducted into the "NCBA Hall of Fame." We, therefore, respectfully nominate Ramon N. Bell to the Executive Council for induction into the "NCBA Hall of Fame", This 10th day of January, 1998.
